How it started

I visited Oregon, USA, several times and I fell in love with it, with its people and the values that these people cherish.  Walking on the street everyone smiles at you and greets you, drivers are very polite with pedestrians. People love and protect nature, a large part of the city is like a resort. Norwegians has the same attitude. Could we copy this model? In the US old ladies make cookies and coffee to finance projects interesting for the community. I cannot make cookies and my coffee is lousy. Could I still help build a better world? Could I find others like me? This is how it started. Dorel Jurcovan

Our Strategy

Contacts with other cultures always lead to valuable ideas.  You can see what others do better, you can find what the problems are and you can see their solutions. To overcome the problem of large distance communication we will use intensively the internet. We create just the communication channel and a minimum of logistics; the overhead and costs are drastically limited, as each individual will administer its individual contacts. The work is based on volunteers and we welcome donations.

The Rose

To achieve visible results we focus at the beginning on two communities, the cities of Portland, Oregon, USA and Timisoara, Romania. Both cities share a common symbol, the Rose.  The Rose seems a very appropriate symbol for spiritual beauty and human communication. Other communities are always welcomed to join.

Our tools

Direct contacts through emails or personal visits, Internet forum. Students’ discussion about daily life, interests, dreams, problems, contemporary issues affecting our planet. Art exhibitions, festivals, cultural exchanges. Sharing models for public administration. Business information exchanges (discovery of new opportunities, business ethics). “Knowledge” tourism, become the guest of potential partner.

Summary of achievements

Even if the project is based on voluntary work, with zero finance (except the personal money of some volunteers), the results are rather positive:
  • established a number of very valuable contacts in Portland.
  • have the support of local authorities in Timisoara.
  • a constant presence in local newspapers and on local TV.
  • organized 4 art exhibition with the participation of 6 high-schools, 2 universities and 1 kindergarten.
  • public presentations in Timisoara in front of high schools and college students about the project.
  • public lessons in rose growing.
  • our volunteers started a detailed research about the history of Timisoara and of Rose growing in the city.
  • one hour radio transmission each week about the project.
  • an art exhibition at the American Corner in Timisoara. This could be the beginning of a traveling exhibition of students' paintings from Timisoara and Portland  in several cities of Romania and US.
  • involved Peace Corps volunteers and Fulbright scholars in Timis county;
  • organize our participation with paintings at the Portland Rose Festival, June 2008.
  • informed the US Embassy in Bucharest and the Romanian Embassy in Washington, DC. about our efforts. They are evaluating the possibility of some support.
  • We have a rather large Internet audience.
